Where did the Phrase "Redneck" Come From
[B]Probably a dumb question to ask, but exactly where and how did the phrase Redneck come about?
And, please don't tell me Joe started the trend either................ Has anyone noticed that my posts are fairly intellectual............ Michael |

Years ago, poor farm workers bending over in the fields would get sun burn on the back of their necks. These migrant workers, share croppers, or just poor laborers often had little education. Hence the term "Dumb Redneck."

yeah i have heard that one too, something to do with them being uneducated farmers who work out in fields all day- hence the red neck from the sun. Fact or Myth i do not know

I will refrain from saying that when you look up the word "redneck" in the dictionary you find a picture of Joe.
Wikipedia has some interesting suggested origins, even going back to the UK!: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Redneck But, I'm not so sure Wikipedia has got this one right. I'm originally from a small town in Tennessee, about a eighty miles east of Nashville. So, I know my rednecks. My Mama used to say that the term originated from the sunburn that a farmer would get on the back of his neck after plowing the fields all day with his beasts of burden. And, I always believed everything my Mama told me.

I think this is an accurate description. It carried on for generations and it is a term that I hear almost daily in my geographic area.

Found this
The popular etymology says that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight over the course of their lifetime. The effect of decades of direct sunlight on the exposed skin of the back of the neck not only reddens fair skin, but renders it leathery and tough, and typically very wrinkled by late middle age. Another popular theory stems from the use of red bandanas tied around the neck to signify union affiliation during the violent clashes between United Mine Workers and owners between 1910 and 1920. Some historians claim that the term redneck originated in 17th century Virginia, when indentured servants were sunburnt while tending plantation crops. An alternative origin of the term comes from Scotland. In Scotland, the National Covenant and The Solemn League and Covenant (aka Covenanters)signed documents stating that Scotland desired a Presbyterian Church Government, and rejected the Church of England as their official church. Many of the Covenanters Signed these documents using their own blood, and many in the movement began wearing red pieces of cloth around their neck to signify their position to the public. They were referred to as Rednecks. Many of the early inhabitants of the US South were of Scottish Descent, and according to this theory, this term was applied to many of the southern Scottish immigrants early on, eventually changing into the term we know today

Joe, you may now speak....
(does a real Redneck require permission to speak?) Just roll the windows down on your Pick Up before you speak, so we can hear you.

Hey, in the south when you mention support it usually means a jock strap for men, and maybe some of the women, and a wire bra for THE GALS. Now you know why southern women go braless at the airport, because of metal detectors.

As stated above, from Red Neck from field workers. In many cultures, especially here in Asia, darker skin denotes lower class to many (Not saying this is right, it is not, but that is a fact of how many with darker colored skin are viewed in Asia).
One of the reasons, many is Asia think Westerners are crazy to get Sun tans, and you see Asians all the time trying to cover their skin from getting darker. Whiter skin is held in higher regard, like here in Thailand where Whitening Creams are one of the highest revenue earners and consumption has drastically increased. |
