I'm a bit surprised.

Is Explorer I an accepted name for the particular model.

As I recall, Rolex never called the watch anything but Explorer.

Great article though, congratulations Dell!

Depends on what you mean "accepted"

Neither have I seen any official Rolex reference to the model as an Explorer I.

And there were a number of discussions about this very point, well before the article went into print (research was actually completed last May, to give you a perspective on lead-times). The decision to make the references as they stand addressed a desire to make colloquial connections, without compromise to the clarity of the piece in question.

Along the same lines as sentence structures that don't each strictly include noun, verb, and object.

Much to the anticipated concern of my high school English teacher and, more importantly, those charged w/ making translations for foreign language publication!

Thanks again for the feedback, guys.

Excellent Dell, you are now famous! You have probably changed the course of watch history in finding out Bond's real watch. Like cracking the Davinci code....:D

Congrats Dell! It's fantastic that your passion has led to your work being published.

Now how do i get a copy of the mag here in Australia, without taking out a subscription?

There is an eMail address for "Subscription Service" on the WatchTime Contact page. If they are not also responsible for single-issue orders, I'd expect that they would be the best place to start in referring you to the right place. LINK

Here in the US, we also have specialty news stands that carry a very wide range of international periodicals. They're sorta out of the mainstream of booksellers. If you have a parallel, I'd check that, too.

Let me know how it turns out.

PS: Did you weigh in on Tools' Poll? Judging from what I've seen in the past week, it seems TRF members are not only interested in James Bond matters, but prefer to have multiple Threads when doing so. But I hate to assume. LINK

This article was not only eye-opening about the watch(es) of James Bond, but was such a good read that by the time I got to the end I was hoping to see "Continued...". No such luck. The article is really well done.

Congratulations Dell. I need to track that magazine down - it's difficult to get in the UK.

W/out giving too much a way at this point, let me respond to this by saying that things look promising for more to come on this subject.

My original draft of the WatchTime article was considerably longer than what the magazine had space to print (although, at that, they considered the content worthy of making it one of the longest features they've ever run). It was also extensively footnoted - they obviously don't run bibliographies, but I felt it was important to include these for a more or less bulletproof accountability - to the tune of approximately 260 cites.

Examples of unpublished content to be explored:
  • Materials related to Terence Young, who directed three of the first four James Bond films for EON Productions
  • Issues related to the Rolex Submariner and the choice of what Sean Connery wore in Dr. No
  • A second Ian Fleming letter regarding the original (literary) James Bond watch
Not "cutting room floor" stuff, but, rather, research that makes for its own exciting story as a stand-alone piece.

Managed to get hold of the article and it is realy well written and beautifully illustrated and contains quite a few surprises. It has reawakened my hankering for an Explorer 1.

Flemming's personal choice of an Explorer makes perfect sense - it was the tough tool watch of the day - it makes perfect sense for an adventurous spirit.

Icon14 "Discovered: James Bond's Rolex" now online!

Wanted to follow up on this Post to let you all know that my February 2009 WatchTime feature article on the original, literary James Bond watch is now available for reading online.

LINK

It's also on the WatchTime website under their print archives section (search either "Ian Fleming" or "James Bond"). That was done under separate contract from the one-time print-use agreement for the publication, so I've retained copyrights - including restrictions on further distribution.

I know there are "risks" in that, sorta expecting honest folks to act, um, honestly. But I've weighed that against the number of people who are really passionate about watches and James Bond, and indulgent of my mixture of the two! So I've erred on the side of making it accessible to even more than the 60,000 WatchTime readers for that reason.

Thanks for all your encouragement, guys!

In this booklet, the Explorers are referred to as "Type I" and "Type II". Do not know if that counts as an official reference.

Do not know which year it is from... and by all means it needn't be a booklet published by Rolex themselves.

Best,

A
