Magnum P.I.

As I mentioned here before I was often an extra on Magnum P.I. back in the day. They used real Honolulu Police Officers to play the part of Police Officers on the show. Long hours, low pay but a great spread of catered food every time!

I was not much of a WIS back then or I would have checked out Tom Selleck's GMT! Tom Selleck is an amazingly nice down to earth guy. He often ate with the cops at lunch.

Here are a few stills of one of the episodes I was on. I am the young blonde cop in the background holding the papers walking back and forth by Tom Selleck. Cheers!

WOW!

That is probably the coolest thing I have ever read on this forum.

I am a huge Magnum P.I. fan.

What a life that fictional character had.

Congrats on the experience and thank you very much for sharing.

PS Would love to hear more about your experiences on the show . . .

I have heard before that Tom Selleck is a nice guy. Great story.

Yea, it was a great experience. I was a fresh rookie cop at the time making squat. In fact if you look at my wrist I was wearing a $10 plastic watch at the time.

Tom Selleck was really well liked and thought of by all who worked on the set. Very humble, super funny and had a great energy with all. He really was just one of the guys. Obviously he was the star of the show and everything revolved around him, but he did not act that way at all.

One of my first Field Training Officers was a regular on the show and asked me if I wanted to be an extra. You had to join the Screen Extra's Guild. All in all it was a great time to be young and in Hawaii.

Tom Selleck gave Rolex I believe to several cast and crew members at the wrap party one year.

In one of the pictures you can see his watch, but I don't know what it is. Can anybody blow that up?

Very cool, KansaiVet, no doubt you have many excellent memories and stories. What was it like watching yourself on television? So few people in life get to have such a neat experience. I'm glad you shared this.

When I first moved to Honolulu I was driving around the island with my wife and on the windward side saw a sign for the Valley of the Temples. I thought this would be cool and stopped for a visit. The very first thing that came to mind when I saw the Byodo-in-Temple was the Magnum PI epesode where the little person (AKA midget) and some big dude where trying to take him out.

Great memory and thanks for the post.

Tom

That is pretty cool. It might make you feel old but I remember watching Magnum P.I with my family as I was growing up. I like Tom Selleck, he always comes across as a nice, likeable guy and I always make time to see any films he's in if they are on.

Hawaii, Magnum....What a claim to fame!!!!

OP shorts were all the rage in the 80's.

I remember them very well being in my mid 20's when Magnum "came out"
I did not like them then either. Those are definitely "coming out mens shorts"

Thanks all.

I also worked on a short lived series in Hawaii called "Jake and the Fat Man." I worked on my days off as a hired Police presence at thier locations for crowd and traffic control. Believe it or not better pay and shorter hours behind the camera than in front of it. No access to the catered buffets though. Anybody remember that series? It starred William Conrad of former "Cannon" fame. He too was a really nice approachable guy.

Hey, no gun threads!

Very cool. Thanks for sharing with the group. How did you end up in OR then for the latter part of your LEO career?

A little off topic I know, but they had you guys in alternate uniforms, it seems? The badges and patches don't look the same to me.

And I vaguely remember 'Jake and the Fat Man' but I don't remember what it was about.
