The Submariner conspiracy
I've been talking to a few ADs recently and a couple of interesting points have been raised in casual conversation.
Firstly the abundance of 16610 Submariner Dates available at the moment and secondly the fate of the 14060M. My dealers have heard mutterings of a glut of 16610's being released to clear outstanding backorders. It appears so around here at least. I've seen more Sub Dates in two months than the past three years. Why? Well firstly it clears the path for an updated Submariner Date to be released in the next year or two. I'm talking the new style case, Maxi dial, ceramic bezel and new oyster bracelet etc. Secondly the new price increases have been relatively high this year to cover the manufacturing costs for the new model and machinery and when its released there will not be a major price rise, prompting customers to buy. As for the 14060M. Well I've heard various ADs telling me they have it from "very reliable" sources that it will be discontinued in the coming year. Looking at the fact its not had SELs and an update yet the price has increased anyway it could be seen as a warning. All this is just talk and nothing is backed with evidence of course. At first I laughed it off but the more I think about recent events the more I'm not so sure.. |

So, the question is... after they're discontinued will their value go up?

Just a question: is this about the Submariner only or is Rolex also going to update the Sea Dweller? Since they are similar, I was wondering. Also, did you hear a more specific date for the update? I assume it was just gossip and your not sure but I thought I would ask anyway.

Interesting theory, it does appear to make sense on the assumption that what you say about the existing Subs being sold out.
On the other hand, wouldn't the price of Submariners be more likely to have remained the same if Rolex wanted to unload existing stocks to make way for a new model. I recall that in Europe the price of the regular date Sub went up to match the price of the Green Sub (try to work that one out)? The new super case is most likely on its way and it is a logical progression for the Sub, GMT (already out in TT & 18K Gold) and Sea-Dweller. I don't think Rolex prices will be coming down in the near future, and with the release of new model Subs, GMTs and Sea-Dweller there are sure to be new higher prices with the release of those new models. So yeah, it's all good, just hand over massive chunks of cash and you can enjoy any Rolex |

Very interesting, I would certainly love a new sub with a better bracelet and clasp. Maxi dial would be nice too preferably with the submariner text in red. I would trade in my sub for it in a heartbeat.

Let no changes be made to this dial with the standard size markers and hands. Who wants a dial cluttered with jumbo blobs of luminova? Nothing wrong with the current bracelet either. I can assure all of you that it was designed for strength and durability...and that it is. The clasp has always been branded as stamped metal...so who cares? It's strong as hell, closes shut with a resounding CLICK and holds the watch in place as it's meant to do. Hey, ROLEX, do you tossers hear me? Don't do a damn thing to the SUB!!! There's the perfect dial... And what the hell's wrong with this luminova? JJ

Yes it was started about a month ago,but IMHO its just a rumour cannot see Rolex discontinuing the 14060M.In relative term they have only just upgraded the movement, but Rolex have done some stranger things.

While I would like to see a 16610 with a maxi-dial, I would hate to see the 14060M be discontinued That one really is a classic

I know I am a "low poster" here, however, if I may, I agree with JJ completely.
What I like about Rolex is that things don't change (or at least very slowly!!). I'd hate to see the Sub lose its pedigree...... |

I could be wrong but I betchya the Subs get updated with the "new" style clasps at the very least. Maybe even solid center links on both the SS and TT models but who knows. They just had a price increase and to make those changes would drive the price even higher one would think.

Why would Rolex (whose marketing is probably the best of the best out there), kill the goose that's laying the golden eggs? The Subs, SDs, GMTs, Exps and Daytonas are selling like the proverbial "hot cakes" as they are at present. Why change a good thing? JJ

The way things trickle down the line with Rolex, I bet the 16610 gets a new clasp and solid bracelet, while the 14060M gets the current SEL hollow bracelet and clasp. I'd be surprised if the drop the 14060M completely. The Sub has always lagged behind the Sub Date. Just my 2 cents.

Honestly JJ, you make it sound as if the markers on a maxi dial are the size of New Jersey It is a very nice watch, I agree, but the ultimate? Superlative yes, but ultimate?
