View Full Version : How flashy are diamond hour indices?

StarryNights
5 June 2017, 12:54 PM
I have my heart set on a 116710blnr, however, I am fascinated by the Datejust 41 ref 126334 with the diamond indices. Since it already has the fluted bezel, do the diamond markers really make it that much more flashy?

DatejustKing
5 June 2017, 12:59 PM
Well.....That just depends on what you want to hear. There 2 totally different watches and one with a totally different function. I mean the Blnr is probably one of the most versatile watches, but what do you really want?

Do you think you'll use the function of the blnr? It definitely retains its value over the DJ.

It comes down to what your looking for in the watch

I'm not one to wear two-tone or diamond watches, but I must say that when my AD had one of these in stock, I was almost moved to buy it, so I think it all depends on you and your personal taste.

If it works for you and fits the occasion, I think a watch with diamond indices is okay for those willing to shell out the money.

It will flash, especially when light hits the Gold Fluted Bezel & Diamonds. Even in a dark setting, once light hits it, they do their magic. It's really cool, but it's not for everyone.

Personally, I love it!

I purchased an OEM diamond bezel and and OEM diamond indices dial for my wife's ladies date just. It looks pretty flashy, especially the bezel in the sun, the dial, not so much. But Diamonds are a girl's best friend, but not necessarily a boy's.

I like the diamonds on the dial, not a fan of diamond bezels. I prefer the diamond dials on most watches, however you pay a high premium for them. Would go for the factory diamonds if you are looking for better resale value. Not too fond of aftermarket dials.

The craftsmanship of cutting diamonds and how these are fitted on a dial goes very well together with a Rolex imho

in my humble opinion, i will say flashy, especially with the fluted bezel and white gold? However i can't stand gold or anything flashy so my opinion doesn't really matter :-)

It also comes down to how comfortable you are with it and the company you keep.

its not ok to have two-tone or sport watches with diamonds. I do think diamonds are prettier on white gold, platinum or my wife wrist. If it is your only men watch you have than I would not recommend diamonds. I think any submariner or yacht-master should not have diamonds. It is like trying to put a basket ball court, water fall, swimming room and a 80 inch TV in a 10x10 room for a 80x40 lot McMansion.

 This is about as well as you can do diamonds on a Rolex in good taste IMO

I think it looks best because

A. the white diamonds contrast well with the deep blue dial
B. the smooth bezel makes the diamonds not add too much, a fluted bezel alone is flashy enough
c. the baguette diamonds look very much like white stick index

Where Mick lives the answer is, in fact, often yes. Tastes and cultures have subtle (and not so subtle) differences each side of the pond.

I'm easy either way, however, the problems with diamonds on a dial is that they physically cannot be set in such a manner as to show them at their best. As such they can be underwhelming in their appearance compared to a more traditional setting such as in a ring.

I was debating this myself and whenever I asked a friend which one to get (dj41 rhodium dial or blue dial with diamonds) they just say go for the stoneless one. If you want people to notice your watch and you want people to know you have apparently 'MADE IT!!' and you want "some ice on your wrist so you look better when you dance" by all means go for the BLING. It's easier than walking around with a flashing neon arrow pointing at your watch, I guess.

I think people will be much more likely to notice a 2 tone watch than they are to notice a watch on account of its diamond indices. The fluted bezel is more shiny than the diamonds.

Yes and herein lies the problem. To a lot of us, men wearing diamonds is akin to the flashing neon arrow and it is plain vulgar and tasteless. On the other hand, some chaps just cannot believe that such attitudes exist.

When I discussed this topic with my wife, she came back with a quick quip, "yes today you want a diamond watch, tomorrow you will be dying your hair jet black."

There will never be a meeting of minds on this.

Diamond dials on the DayDate and DateJust look very nice and classy on men IMO. If you love it, buy what you love. Diamond dials IMO are not flashy as the diamonds are subltle. Liberace could pull off that look, I cannot. To each their own.

Let's not be too rough on Mick, he's doing what everyone else on this thread, on this website is doing - expressing his opinion, only a bit more bluntly than most.

And Mick, in Brooklyn we call it 'couszheen'. And there are plenty out there who know what I mean.

Hi Jack

No one has been rough, opinions will differ, that is a fact of life.

I did a google on couszheen - nothing came up, what does it mean ?

Regards

Mick

I think the baguettes on the DD's and Platona look absolutely stunning.

I don't have any watches with diamond dials.

But if you like your watches with diamond dials.

Enjoy wearing them.

Some aspects of diamonds can be classy...
Baguettes...
Diamonds with a white metal surround...
Diamonds with minimal surrounds...
Diamonds with no surrounds...
Diamonds on a dark or contrast dial...
My dream diamond Rolex would be 18238, gloss black dial, baguettes.
Ooh mama.

Yeah...totally agree. Not crazy about the round diamonds, not b/c of their flashiness, but the shape.

The exception for me being the serti dial on the sub...where I think the round shape fit very nicely as the sub dial uses round markers.

Only wear what you like and feel comfortable with. I'm hoping to get a platinum DD one day. I've heard even on this forum that diamonds don't belong on a man's wrist, but that's just someone's opinion. My wedding band is plain 18kt YG and I wouldn't want a diamond ring. But I think the smooth bezel DDs with factory diamond dial look fantastic.

I think too many ppl are picturing a fully encrusted case, dial, and bracelet when someone mentions diamonds. Unless someone is up close and inspecting your watch, not very many will even notice.

Diamond dials are beautiful on watches. Not flash at all.

Diamonds and other gemstones on a Rolex is more than acceptable imo.

It's just a matter if you like them on your watch or not. If you like it and own it. Nothing looks silly, tacky or pretentious. The douche is always the person. Never the clothing, watch, car etc.

A bust down prezzy is dope if you can pull it off. Diamonds are not for everyone, from what I've read on this forum the majority of people here like to fly under the radar because swagging out is not in their blood. Instead being a basic person like the rest of the herd is the way of life for them (I have my fly under the radar watches as well). I personally like the baguette diamonds on my dd40, I get asked if they are diamonds so I assume it's not flashy. However I am on the fence of busting it down with a diamond ranch for when I step out on the scene I'll be wet wet and make the snoody pretentious guys hate for being too loud. Not here for friends so haters can hate.

Gemstone indices are cool by me. I'm not sure I would like a completely iced out watch, but a little ice is nice. :) Aloha, Tim

Not flashy at all, they are very small and need close inspection to see them, nobody from a distance will ever lnow

IMO, the small diamonds on my 18038 are more subtle, so it works for me in dressy situations. But I do not like diamond bezels.. Too flashy.

Beautiful. I think the baguette diamonds make all the difference. They are more modern looking than round diamonds.

Never understood Roman numerals or diamonds for hour markers. I think they look beautiful, but makes the watch useless at night when trying to tell the time…but to each his/her own.
