Question on DateJust

I inhereted a Datejust 1600 from my father. It was made in 1970. I tried to find out the calibre inside that watch and got some conflicting and confusing information from various websites. Here are some samples:

One says it's calibre 1565/1575

Several say that it's calibre 1570 with date, but one says that 1570 does not have a date and is only used in Explore 1.

One says it's calilbre 1575 but stamped as 1570.

Yet another says calibre 1575 has a GMT hand, which is clearly not for Datejust.

Clearly, my head is spinning in all directions :banghead::banghead::banghead: Can someone help me?!

Welcome to the forum. Nice pix and nice Datejust in good condition for an old boy.
IMO that has a 1570 non-quickset movement.

The 1600 DJ from around mid 1960s to around 1977 should have the 19800 BPH Cal 1575.From 1977/88 the Cal 3035 from 1988/9 on the cal 3135

Then should be whats called the Cal 1570/5 with date are you sure your watch is not made before 1970 get the back off to be certain.

The serial number is 291xxxx. Based on the refernce table I saw on the net, it should be 1970.

I would not worry to much about the movement the 1570/5 with date or without date or cal 1575 are all very similar main difference one is used in the GMT .And IMHO the 15XX series the finest movements Rolex have ever made to date,very over engineered long lasting movements IMO your watch is slightly before 1970.

You can't take any serial number list as absolutely factual..

Rolex simply does not provide that information and all lists are compiled by word of mouth....and they are all actually based on when a particular serial number was sold....

consider it an estimate of the date manufactured, until you find evidence otherwise..

For your watch, I would also go with a ~1969 production date based on the serial and features.

Nice vintage watch in very good shape. Fist time I've seen this reference, better than the one's I use before.

I did some searching on the web today (instead of doing work, bad me:dummy:). Did not find anything on DJ 1600. However, in Antiquorum's recent auction catalog (Nov 08) , there was a DJ 1601 from 1965 with calibre listed as 1570.

I am venturing a guess: calibre 1575 is the same as calibre 1570 with date?

my 1680 has the cal 1570 in it, it's also been referred to as the 1570/5 because it has the date function...just one of those wierd things Rolex did! Little did they know how confusing they would make things!

My circa 1977 1601 has a calibre 1570 . I doesn't have a quickset date :cheers:

They are both Date-Justs made in the 1970's The only difference is:
1601 has a fluted bezel and jubilee bracelet.
1600 has a flat bezel and an oyster bracelet.
Both have 26 jewels and power reserve of around 42 hours.

Both watches have 1575 movements which do not have a quick set date. They are 1570 movements with date features.
Incredible movement and found in other watches like the SD 1665 and the 1680 Sub.
Sometimes the movement is marked 1570 but it is really a 1575 :cheers:

There is a Rolex caliber 1575 movement with 19,800 bph and a Rolex caliber 1575-GMT, 19,800 bph.

The 1575-GMT movement is fitted to the Rolex GMT model 1675 GMT and the 1655 Explorer II (orange 24 hour hand):cheers:

Had a look inside my old DateJust. It was the first Rolex I bought - I thought it was a 1970 (276****) but it is stamped 11.71.
Excellent condition inside for 37 years old this month. :chuckle: Happy Birthday. :prty:
