I know this question belongs somewhere else, but I didn’t know where to post it.

My wife’s nephew inherited his grandfather’s pocket watch. He wants to have it modified to wear as a wrist watch.

I know this is a bad idea.

Can this mod be done without destroying the watch. If yes, who does this kind of work?

I guess you only need to weld lugs on the case, but if it could be reversed without damaging the case is another question. Tell him to buy a three piece suit instead

+ a nice watch fob/chain. Don't butcher-up an antique with family history.

Besides, the conversion would make for an oversized wristwatch and the crown would be somewhat out of kilter.

This 'conceptual' conversion sounds like an atypical Millennial mentality. :chuckle:

As long as he’s willing to butcher it, it can be done relatively easily. Weld wire/lugs to the sides to attach straps. Take out the dial and relocate the dial feet so the crown is oriented at 3oclock.

I have seen some leather watch bands made to hold pocket watches. That would be the cheapest route to go.

Depending on the size, you can buy wristwatch cases in sizes made for pocket watches, and have the movement recased, it does not harm either the case or movement.
I believe the cases are on eBay. I have bought 12 size cases for $50. Then paid a watchmaker to swap the movement.

Vortic watch company recases pocket watches into wristwatches. My personal opinion is the have poor quality cases and charge to much. I think around $1,000. In fact I think the $50 cases I purchased we're of better quality than Vortic. But there is an ease factor there.

And I thought RGM does custom case work, which would be the most expensive route..... I think.

Soldering lugs on to the case would be expensive at least practical way to use as wristwatch in my opinion

Here is a pocket watch that I had recased.
Case was $50.
Had a stem made, cased and serviced for $100https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/c65686be128faf834ba1ed70d1090d86.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180131/b32ad2b2eecc9698568b3aed3f235179.jpg
