I’m a little late to the game here but I saw an Undone Killy on my instagram feed the other day and really loved the style. The fact that they kept the case small like the hodinkee skipper and didn’t blow it up like the autavia to keep the vintage feel is a big plus. Unfortunately I’m having trouble getting over the fact that it’s ultimately a quartz watch. Are there any other companies doing work like this in true mechanical watches? Am I just being a snob about the quartz vs mechanical?

I seem to be one of only a handful of readers on the TRF who are familiar with the Swiss Rado brand. I even recall some0ne on the forum who once said and I quote " I wouldnt be caught dead wearing a Rado ". Well, if people are ignorant about a taboo brand, then I guess they will not be able to answer your question in a true WIS sense.

The original automatic Rado Captain Cook 1962-1968. The example here 35.5 mm unpolished with the gyroscopic rotating anchor, missing the hour lume plot though ,rice beads bracelet WR 220 m

The modern reintepretation and a Baselworld 2017 release, still the remarkably recognizable automatic but ceramic Rado HyperChrome Captain Cook fitted with the waterproof leather is limited to 1962 pieces worldwide. The purist dream watch is still petite at 37mm WR 100m but pays remarkable attention to details and honesty in homage to its ancestors https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/5ea5c0d5bd7d348ad4a9cab52ff1cee0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/31dcfef24b5b51a669a8ec2734916310.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/7febee32e9c60a1885b9d002320862fd.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/89df0c95b6eb6adca4308a3a6a536a56.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/09cab66d28e3d1bc9f3311f60939960a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180303/c835f688035234f26a97ff7bbfee4343.jpg

At that price point I prefer a solid quartz movement over a cheapo mechanical that will run 20 secs a day fast/slow and double the cost of the watch in service fees over ten years.

And...

With a meca-quartz, you get a far slimmer watch than one with, say, a traditional movement. Seiko VK61 should be easy whenever it does need a service.

The only potential drawback with Undone is longevity. Will they be around long enough to have spares for the other pieces that wear out or need replacement in case of damage?

That’s a good point about using a cheap mechanical movement as opposed to a quartz on the cost of service. I hadn’t thought in those terms
