I have not paid any premium on any of my watches.
Can I afford a few grands more on a Rolex? Yes. Would I ever pay that? Never; not for something that amounts to nothing more than jewelry pieces.
To me it's not about affordability, but about the will power to set the boundaries against material temptations. Strong people control things rather than be controlled by things.
