This joke is a "time waster" joke. The first version I heard of it was over 15 yrs. ago, and the kid wanted "green golf balls" and was a race car driver. The whole point of the joke is to make someone listen as long as possible, and then leave them with no punchline.
It works best verbally, and doesn't work at all in written form.
