34mm might be too small for a modern man. However, there are many people on this forum who are collectors and have the appreciation for all watches/sizes. That said, 39mm would be better as a first nice watch. Once he start collecting he may look for different look/size/brand of watches.

Personally I think this advice is sound. The 39mm OP is the perfect modern all round piece.
