You're correct in that they did use a new metal but the physical cases (or more specifically, midcases) are the same dimensions. However, the caseback on my 017 measured 0.50mm thinner than on the 037 with both fully seated.
The SLA017 measured 14.20mm and SLA037 measured 14.70mm. Crystals and bezels measure the same on each.

I'd post a comparison but just sold my SLA017 a few days ago and decided to keep the SLA037.
