The 42mm 50 fathoms is a moden interpretation of the original model which is unwearable by many, the 5 digit Sub LV is discontinued, it reatins many of the original Sub characteristics with some twist, so yes it is more piece unique not to add that the value of a good LV example (full set) will only appreciate with time.
By the way, there is plastic version of the 50 fathoms "Swatch" that can might help with the itch
