I have been quiet through this whole thing, I am sorry to hear both situations. I have to say I do not believe Tristan fits a conman characteristic, more a habitual liar. I have encountered this type before and I think this phrase fits the profial. If he was a small time conman the money would have never been returned and he did not gain a whole lot in the hotel transaction - his mouth just could not cash the checks writen.
I think his story after story was like a pyramid scheme built on lies, he was trying to act like he was bigger than he is. That is my short take on the situation, again I am sorry for your loss; hopefully one day you can look back on the good vacation you had, not the ordeal behind it. Thank you for sharing
