I do not know how you would tell what it was originally. The movement might give you a clue to the era it is from. The dial is worth some hard cash, and if you replace the red dial with a white dial and sell the red dial, it could be a good deal for someone looking for the correct red sub dial.
I was looking for a red sub dial for my 1970, 1680 Submariner a while back and ended up selling the watch to a guy that had the correct dial for the watch. He was happy and I was happy.
