Thanks Bo, that's very interesting.

My 214270 has an illusional appearance that the dial face is small, but it is around the same size as the 'big boys'. My wife said she liked my Explorer 39mm as it had passing resemblance to a sub no date sans the bezel. Very passing IMO! I think she may be secretly liking this model for herself!

Models like the Sub and GMT have timer bezels that create the illusion of the dial face being a lot larger, when it is only marginally different from mine.

I also own a watch (non-rolex) that has the crystal extending all the way to the case edge and this gives the illusion that the watch is bigger.

The diameter of the crystal has some influence about a watch wearing big or small on the wrist.
