It's not different from buying any other major "appliance" like a car or oil painting. Chances are the enthusiast will know more than the salesperson. Not everyone brings full enthusiasm and attention to their paying gig: I have been guilty of this myself. But I have never, ever, turned down an opportunity to learn from a consumer.
