I just acquired my first rolex less than a month ago, but had worn Panerai to work for several years now. Depends on the model you would wear, but I think Panerais work great with smart casual attire.
I actually have the 233 that you're considering. It's a favorite for many. Put on a black alligator and it looks great on a suit, put on any other strap and it works with smart casual. I also had the 372, and have a 329 (bracelet model) as well. They all work great for smart to business casual. Just really depends on the strap you match them up with.
