Long term direct contact with metal affects the aging mechanisms and/or changes to the physical parameters of the luminescent paint. By itself, the ingredient in Luminova (Strontium Aluminate) is chemically and biologically inert. It doesn’t react with much.
But, when activated with a dopant (e.g. europium) it will emit ions and interact with metals in the WG plots with which it is in constant contact. But only a small fraction of the lume is in contact with metal on the edges of the hands.
Perhaps the local atomic surroundings of the optical active ion in the luminescent strontium may be interacting with one of the WG alloy metals in the plots. All I know is the earlier tritium active element ages far quicker and with greater yellowing than today’s lume.
