39mm has been a standard size since the late 80's. My first Swatch back in 1988 was a 39mm. My Swiss Army watch a couple years later also a 39mm. 34 and 36mm would be on the small side, even when I was a young teen in the mid 80's.

I think 40mm is not that big, it is average.
i was talking about me personally.
6 months ago i was wearing vintage panerai 47mm. anything smaller felt and looked ridiculous.
Then someone lent me a 'little' 36mm explorer which felt way too small.
after a few days it felt great and everyone wearing larger watches looked silly (to me).

now i have an older submariner and am considering a datejust or explorer.
