I am new to the forum and looking for advice. I have also searched the forum.
I have a Day-Date Presidential- 1803.
The watch was a gift (new) to my uncle in the late 1960's, 1970 at the latest. He gave the watch to me in 1989.
I dropped into the Rolex NYC (5th Ave) store, mostly to check it out. At my son's suggestion, I inquired about the winding stem which unscrews from time to time (and to see the service center). They found the serial number to be missing. They confirmed that the watch is genuine. For service, I would need documentation including the serial#.
As noted, this is a gift x2 thus no sales receipt (again, new when given to my uncle).
I have had the watch serviced at least 4 times- ALL by Rolex technicians. It is running perfectly.
I do have the original "Your Rolex Oyster" manual. The model# and serial# are hole punched through about 11 pages.
In addition, I have my 1989 appraisal from Maier & Berkele in Atlanta (which is now out of business after 110 years). The description documents the serial#.
Plus, I have the original box and the presentation box.
The Rolex service center said for me to copy the documentation and they will send a mailing box when I decide to have service.
My local Rolex technician confirmed the worn/polished missing serial#. He could see faint evidence of the model#. He said that he sees this problem as did a store that I called in Texas.
I can continue getting service locally, Rolex approved/certified with a valid 2yr repair warranty.
Advice that I have received-
1- Continue enjoying the watch
2- Secure my documentation
3- Update my appraisal
4- Do NOT get the serial# re-engraved

I do not wish to have the casing replaced to get a new serial#- cost and numbering restarts.

I do not plan to sell the watch.
