Nicely said and a thanks for the bump. As I spent so many holidays "out on the beat" I'm also cognizant of some of the other "denizens" that were out there working the same hours I was before I retired. The hotel clerks, restaurant workers, convenience store workers, ER staff and the like.

My wife wanted to go to the store on Saturday and it was madness. She’s one of those “just one more thing” folks. She didn’t need anything, but what if a Brahmin purse was on sale?

I make it a point to smile and try to converse with every worker that engages me, however briefly. It only takes a second and I hope it takes away a little of the sting with not being with family.
