Maybe the terminology should be: collectors vs. consumers.

As the OP pointed out, going to an AD to buy a new currently-in-production Patek is not really collecting, but rather consuming. That's simply buying a luxury item you like and want and have the means to do so. There's no special artistry or talent in that. All it takes is cash. No different than buying a new Porsche 911 at the dealer.

On the other hand, hunting relentlessly to buy vintage, out-of-production rare and distinctive Pateks is collecting. This requires knowledge, understanding and diligence to ferret out undervalued and under-the-radar pieces in unusual places.

Yes, I know it's cool to fancy oneself a "collector". The reality is many of us are not collectors, we're just consumers of high-end watches that we like. Some people spend their disposable income on sports cars, or luxury vacations, or fancy dinners, or designer clothes. Others spend it on watches.

And there's nothing wrong with that.
