It’s not the first time and won’t be the last where a ‘war’ story has been used to bid up the value.
The engraving means nothing to anyone except the owner and the family and regards the provenance it gives the piece, doesn’t even mean to say the watch went to war, it’s also utterly ruined the case and to my eye what the watch is worth.
The fact someone was stupid enough to pay $10k for it comes down to clever marketing.
