I removed the DE from my Deep Sea and my SD43. I have relatively skinny wrists, so I have the DE and an additional link removed on the SD43 to fit me properly.
The DE keeps the clasp and bracelet fitting as nicely on my wrist as the watches do without it in place. I'm not going to be needing to strap the watch over a wet suit here in Florida, so I'd rather the watch be comfortable.
