It's "possible" because I had a reservation. This was at a large open-air restaurant and tables open all the time. It's somewhat luck of the draw as to which table you get when there may be 2-5 available at any one time.
I saw a table that was right in the middle of everything and I wanted it. My reservation was already a little late, which happens at this particular place, and I asked for it. I would have been seated in that wave of tables anyway, I just requested the prime table.
