I would think such an issue is more likely to slip by Rolex QC, or if original owner had a replacement crystal installed by a random watchmaker

Agree completely. I’ve seen some replicas that ‘honestly’ seem nicer than my watch for some reason. A guy I know has a fake Sub Hulk. Say what you want but it’s absolutely stunning. I’ve looked for all the fake markings but cannot find them as it’s literally perfect.
