Unlikely it was on the wrist for that damage to ensue, and if it was then one can only imagine the injury to the wrist would be severe (hope not). It looks more like the watch may have been inside some type of cover/case while it was going through this trauma. The crystal on both sides is not cracked at least in these pictures. Direct heavy blow(s) would not leave the crystal unscathed. The crown seems to have been caught in something and pulled with such force so as to cause the case to come apart. Just my hypothesis, could be all wrong.

Very sad indeed regardless of the backstory.
