I just happened to have bought a 5172G and tested a 26331 APROC 41mm yesterday. The mm size classification is a joke and says nil about how a watch wears. The AP looks like a giant and in fact wears larger than my 44mm Rolex Deepsea. 5170 wears a tiny bit smaller than the 5172G but that's mostly due to a smaller dial Surface. The case itself is quite assertive with long Calatrava lugs and 21mm lug width (20mm on 5172G). See pics for comparisons between 41mm 5172G and 41mm AP on my 6,5’’ wrist.

Same base caliber 29-535 in all current manual chronographs yes. 5270 has a PC module and 5370 has a rattrappante module. Grand complications are likely better finished but I can't fault anything on my 5172G.

I think the second hand value is roughly comparable between 5172G and 5170R +5170G second iteration. J and G with pulso dial are cheaper. Might be tricky getting a discount on 5172G right now though since supply isn’t high but the second hand value is soft so in time discounts are certain. For now the list price of 5172G is comparable to that of used 5170P.
