A solar powered G-Shock really is the way to go. No maintenance required, and durable as heck. I used to sell them at a sporting goods store 20 years ago, and I'd demo them to customers by grabbing an end of the strap and slamming the watch head onto the counter very hard. Barely a scratch.

Of course, if we're talking nuclear winter without sunlight, then I'd probably go with my Explorer II, although a simple F-91 with a 10+ year battery may be a wise choice.
