Help identifying watch - fake or real 6427?

Hi.
I am new to this and am hoping someone can help me identify the watch in the attached pics.

Background - my wife's father left it to her before he died and the only information he gave was that he got it second hand for his 21st birthday (which was around 1960). It has no box or papers.

I have done some research and suspect it might be a fake as some things don't quite add up. The serial number is unclear / unreadable. It has 'registered design' between the lugs at 12 o'clock and when it is moving the sweep is about 6 marks per sec. The back has no markings and there is a '357' stamped into the strap.

I took it to a watch repair shop and they looked the name of the front and said they would need to send it away to the Rolex agent - which I would happy to do if i was a bit more certain it was real.

Any help would be appreciated.
