I personally would follow manufacturers recommendations as these are usually derived from extensive research and development testing (durability). The watch has lubricated mechanical components which are influenced by temperature, thermal shock, friction etc. I'm no watch expert but I'm assuming the lubricating oil breaks down over time and loses it's lubricity which can result in wear and tear of moving components. I can relate it to having my vehicle serviced, it's more to ensure optimum performance and the longevity of my engine.
