Mortality rates for influenza are fairly consistent at 0.01%. They are well known because patients presenting to their healthcare providers are routinely tested for the flu virus. The numbers of infected and the numbers who die from the flu are well known. Until routine testing of patients presenting with symptoms is done for Coronavirus as well, mortality estimates are basically guesses. But everything I’ve seen about the course of the disease once diagnosed shows it to be more serious and life-threatening than influenza.
