44mm is the ‘classic’ Panerai size - at least for the brand’s modern offerings, with 47mm being more true to the roots of the company as a supplier of instruments before the 90s relaunch. 42mm is (rightly or wrongly) seen as a further dilution/bastardization of this.
As an aside, your Rolex equivalence is the wrong way round - with 36mm being the classic DateJust size, the 41mm is the ‘not quite the same’ choice in that equation.
