So your question encapsulates the exact problem with Panerai these days... It doesn't exist. The 372 as you pointed out would be the most "classic" representation of a Panerai, but there really isn't a model that exists any longer 44mm. In the past, I'd tell you the 111 or 112 would be great examples. There are similar models available today, but none exactly like either. This is deliberate on the part of Panerai.

As I have stated many times; there are plenty of worthy Panerai models in production, but there is no cohesive core line up. The cheapest, entry level models all slack on one detail or another (sandwich dial, additional dial text, snap-on caseback, etc). What people really want is a 911 with a black dial. This would give you an in-house movement, sandwich dial, gold hands, screw down caseback, 44mm size, no unnecessary dial text.
