It largely depends on the airport & terminal layout. Domestically, I'd prefer 1.5-2 hours, but don't want to spend longer in the terminal that the flight itself. Internationally, 3-4 is pretty much the sweet spot if you're flying regularly (allows for a shower, food & duty free); if it's infrequent, longer layovers in the right airport can be enjoyable too.
