I can't see any indication that it removed metal. It doesn't take much pressure to clean the surface, and I have only really done it once when I got it (pre owned). But seems safe to me that I wouldn't hesitate to do it yearly or as needed.

And as mentioned, the eraser trick does work as well. I haven't tried it because I didn't have a big one available, but it shouldn't remove any metal.
