This is one option I was thinking of.

Look at Marathon field watches, too. I think there are a couple that are ~34mm, and they have cool, toolish character.

Alternatively, there are tons of vintage men's watches out in the world with case diameter ~32mm - 34mm, and $250 will buy a pretty good one. It won't have a rotating bezel, and you'll probably have to have it cleaned and oiled at least once (maybe at purchase, and maybe once more before he outgrows it), but he'll get to wind it each morning

I would look for an old Hamilton field/military style watch or something similar, because these will have good enough water resistance to withstand the occasional dousing.
