That is smudge/dirt or something from a jacket, shirt, etc.. Dirt on the outside of the case just can't be a manufacturing defect.

Sorry, but this reminds me about a thread on a swedish watch forum were someone believed that his arm hair was causing swirls on the polished areas of his Rolex.
