because of the social distancing measures that have been adopted + an anticipated increase in medical system capacity, the UK should (probably) be able to handle the load. The original report contained projections based on several different scenarios, one of which was the world literally doing nothing to stop the spread. Many people/media outlets latched onto the most dire projection, which is not the fault of the authors as the report clearly stated what the projections were based on.
