I think Mr Johnson and I had similar experiences. But I'm jealous of his DJ, it looks GREAT, a bit more style than my old no-date watches.
If you go in with a four-digit watch, and ask, RSC will make the change with whatever they've got available, for a shocking amount of money of course. IIRC when I asked about changing my grey-dial DD
