I think the key is wrist size and shape. My wife has 5.5 inch wrists, but they are more pencil like, so a 31 mm would be at the limit of what she could wear. She did try both 26 mm and 31 mm at the AD, but the 26 mm just seemed to look better, and for her it still looks pretty large after 2 months. I have noticed women with the same watch and how it can look smaller, but that seems to be because of their larger wrists and also where they wear the watch. If your wife has 6 inch plus wrists, she should be able to pull off the 31 mm and have it look in proportion.
