All mechanical watches will need to be serviced in order for the lubricating oils to be cleaned off and replaced, and any dirt that has accumulated to be removed.

Modern oils are much longer-lasting than oils used in the past, but even so, servicing should still be carried out at regular intervals to ensure movement longevity.

With regards to using a watchwinder, you wouldn't leave a car in the garage for a long period of time and expect it not to need servicing before being run! So I personally would use a watchwinder rather than leave a watch unworn for a long period of time.
