Offered my first Patek....5524G....

Hi All, I was offered my first Patek today. Very exciting! I was offered a 5524G, which I know is a very controversial watch from what I have read and watched online. For those that own it, what do you think? I don't mind the 42mm size at all for myself personally. I would probably have to sell off my Mint Green Sky D on Jubilee to put towards the watch. I know the 5524G doesn't seem to hold it value very well, and I am sure this is a first watch to help you get in the door for others kinda offering. I do like the blue dial, and don't have any '"strap" watches. Mostly modern Rolex. Decisions....

Do you like the pushers? Do you like the sword style of the hands? Does it sit on your wrist OK?

You take such a tremendous hit on the price if you buy a new one from a dealer. The only reason why I would go that way is if you’re trying to build up some sort of purchase history or you wanna buy new and you just love the thing. And you don’t really care about the depreciation because you don’t need to worry about the depreciation.

I wouldn't buy it from an AD, because you can find it for 15-20k cheaper on the secondary market. And certainly not if I was debating whether to get it and had to sell off pieces.

What Pateks are you hoping to realistically obtain in the future?

i like the smaller 7234G version better, that being said the Pilot would be the last watch i would buy at an AD. There $32-34k on the gray market.

5935A salmon is my first preference. I have a great relationship with this AD, and they just thought this was one that I might like since I haven't made the jump to PP yet.. I do like the style, but the price point and hit on that model is rough.

Had also thought about a 5936, 5326, or 5205, 5172.

the 5524G is going for $30K-$35K all day long on the secondary market. The only way I would buy the pilot variants from an AD at full retail (plus tax) is if they sold it in a bundle with a 5980 or 5990 LOL!!

I'd go for the 5326 from the AD. I think it's a great complication and the tan strap looks amazing on it. Secondary prices are right at MSRP.

This is a polarizing watch. In fact I have been love-hate-love cycle on it and currently in love and looking at one.
That said, if not in love with it, don’t buy. Easy to tel your dealer that it’s too big and rather get one of the others on your list. You can always come back to it later.

I bought one last week from my AD. Love it. First PP. I suppose one way to view it is I’m $15-20k underwater versus secondary market, but I’m playing the long game with the brand. I’m betting there’s a strong chance future allocations at retail will close that gap. Time will tell.

Prefer it over the sky dweller.

There is a value in buying new from AD. To u it is $20k. Enjoy the watch, only your opinion matters!

Personally I love the style of the 5524. I am biased as I have a 7234 and my thought is maybe in the future the masses will lust for what they didn't.

...or they will always trade below their MSRP...

Either way I love em' and that's all that matters to me.

The 5524G is definitely a unique watch with its own charm. While it may be controversial, what matters most is how it feels on your wrist and if you personally love it. If you're drawn to the blue dial and want to add a "strap" watch to your collection, it could be a great choice! Just make sure to consider the value retention and if it aligns with your long-term goals. Good luck with your decision! Let us know what you end up going for.

It’s one of my all-time favorite PP‘s! That being said, unless I really, really had an agenda that I wasn’t going to stray from , as far as building a relationship with an A.D.… There’s no way I would buy it from a PP AD

As an owner of a 5524g, I can tell you it's a wonderful watch, sits flat on the wrist, great subtle texture to the dial and very useful complications. If you live it then go grab it, either grey or from the AD to build the relationship.

It’s an extremely cool great fitting functional watch. And what I like most, it’s off the beaten path — “so wrong for so many.”

All of that said, I would not pay $20,000 over Gray market pricing to build a relationship with anybody for anything

Personally I’d have a problem paying retail if it’s available for almost 50% off but if you feel like it will open the door for you for other pateks and you trust the AD will be around for a while go for it. I like the watch just don’t think retail price is justified

It's great you have a solid relationship with your AD, but there is a significant risk PP will cut more of the ADs especially since there are several in CA and you could end up holding the bag.

Even if your AD survives the ongoing pruning by PP I would still not buy the 5524g at retail: with CA sales tax the retail price is $63K and the discount on the secondary market is 50%! You probably have better odds of playing one had of blackjack with $30K than landing your grail Patek within a year after purchasing the 5524g from an AD. Just sayin

Save yourself time and money.
Go grey on the Nautilus / Aquanaut you like.
The only reason why the sport model is so expensive on Gray is because they intentionally make so few of them ( 20% of total production is sport dedicated).
For me it is not superior in craftmanship / finitions than any steel AP. Just more expensive …

Completely agree with the idea of purchasing the 5524 grey. Why pay the AD price when the watch is so substantially discounted on the grey market.

But then...Does this concept apply universally to all heavily discounted watches? Should one always go grey on brands that are extensively discounted on the secondary market? So for Blancpain, Breguet, JLC, Glashutte, Omega, IWC, Grand Seiko, you name it, why ever go to the AD except for a few difficult to obtain pieces?

That's the question everyone should ask themselves.

Are you planning on a long relationship and want minute repeaters, rare handcrafts and sports models at retail - if the answer is yes then you better spend some real money. For anyone else go grey I'd say.

Imo Patek at least has som allure because they have a variety of things to offer if I do have a relationship. Most brands just don't make sense at all to buy at the boutique unless if it's to build purchase history at a multi brand store.
