Advice on a used Explorer 1

I have been cruising forums, local shops and ebay for a while now in search of an Explorer 1 in good shape, without authenticity issues, for a good price. I put a modest bid on an ebay auction thinking I would be outbid instantly, but then won. Having committed to buy it, I sent off my payment and am awaiting my new (2001) Explorer, but it being ebay, I am anticipating problems. Attached are photos and the seller's description. Do any of you see anything obviously wrong? Does the lack of warranty card seem too suspicious? When it arrives should I immediately take it to RSC? As a total noob, I appreciate any and all wisdom.

From description:

Rolex Explorer I 114270 - 36mm Stainless Steel - K Series - Boxes/Booklets & 'Collector-New' - Discontinued Sport Model
Pre-owned in as-new & virtually unworn, 'collector-new' condition; Comes with: original Rolex inner/outer presentation box set, Rolex Explorer Instruction booklet, Rolex factory service booklet, original Rolex hang tags, plastic bezel protector--everything as pictured. Please note original owner misplaced Rolex Warranty Certificate!!!!

As a general rule it's best to research before you buy...but I get it that you weren't planning to win. did you get a good price???

Sorry but I can't see the pics for some reason.

Missing papers are common. Some folks won't pay as much for a watch without papers.

Sure get it checked out. This is not a model which is often counterfeited...but it could have aftermarket parts or be DOA.

Hope it works out.

I say contact Bodybump (Oscar) he has one in superb condition, and he is very very very trusted seller. Grab that piece before someone else does

It does look in fantastic condition given its ages, but that does make me a little suspicious. Especially as it has everything except the warranty card. But let's assume it's 100% Rolex, then don't sweat the no warranty as unless it's been serviced it's way out of date anyway

but maybe someone whose actually got a 36mm can you tell if this one 'looks' legit, not sure it would come with a bezel protector would it?

I've seen fake Explorer 1s that are either indistinguishable from pictures alone, or they're just using pictures of a genuine example. Once you've received it I'd take it straight to an expert for peace of mind.

No need to worry prematurely, just take it to be verified and go from there.

Watchuwant is legit. You probably paid a few bucks too much for it, which is why no one outbid you, but you'll get the watch as was described. Congrats and enjoy!

I'e dealt with WatchUWant they are legit but a bit on the pricy side for most things. I think you are worrying unduly.

I'd take it to RSC for piece of mind. Though such a shame that everything is there except for the original warranty card/papers. But if are not going to be flipping it soon, don't sweat it.

It was $3200, which seems reasonable.

That was a reasonable price. If the watch in the photos is the one you receive, I think you will be in great shape. My 214270 was about $4950, came with the box, papers, etc from a jeweler in Forida, on EBay. It actually looks better in person than the photos, serial numbers match the warrenty card, and the watch is barely a year old. It keeps very good time, better than my GMT Master II (which is about six years old and needs a movement cleaning).

I brought it to Central Watch in New York where they examined it and pressure tested it. It is authentic and sound. WatchUWant can't tell me when the last service was, so I guess prudence gets it done sooner rather than later. I'm pleased that I didn't get ripped off (obviously) and and I very much appreciate the advice here.

Seller is legit from what I just read about them. They sell a lot of watches. Looks like you got a great deal. Post pics when you get it. No harm in having a pressure test and finding out about service history but I think it will be a great watch.

congrats... one of my main concerns with many eBay sellers is that they over polish the case (and call it mint!)... from the pics, that may not be an issue

I couldn't be more pleased with it. Quick plug for Central Watch -- they were gentlemen, helpful, fast, and could have sold me a full service, but recommended waiting.

If it looks like the pictures, you did very well. Not at all unusual to find a 10 year old Rolex that is in beautiful condition. Congratulations.
