East Coast Service

Greetings,
New member here...first post, I think, even...
Recently picked up a 5512 PCG that is having 'issues.'
I'm not sure if I want to give it back to the seller, for servicing. (This is the second time this happened to me! The other time, with another dealer, and a 5508)
The watch ran when I got it, but since then it only runs for a brief period, before it needs to be tapped, or moved, to initiate the semi-normal operations of the mechanism.
Having just purchased the watch, and loving it, I really want to wear it...and have it function! Can anyone recommend a great person on the East Coast, who won't have it forever in their clutches? The seller has offered to take it back, and service it, but I'm leery of people who sell me watches that end up not working.
Thank you,
Edward

If you wish to keep it, send it to Bob Ridley in Texas. I am not sure of I would keep it.

I spoke with Bob, about my 5508. I already emailed him about this one.
The watch came from a dealer that is 'recommended' on the Forums...I like the watch, are you saying you wouldn't keep it???

This is a fairly old watch you're dealing with and you don't know how long it's been since its last service. I would give Bob Ridley a chance to work his magic...

I would have given it back to the dealer who sold it to you
so he can sort it out within a month.
The trouble is...who will he give it to for service ?
most likely his local watchmaker who I am sure inspected the watch
before it was sold to you or so I would like to believe that he did.
You have spend already a small fortune for the watch
and you deserve good time keeping.
My watchmaker was working for the Rolex factory in Geneva
for about 35 years and he is the best kept secret in the
Rolex servicing world.
Perfect in every way he would have charged 300 dollars to make it fly...

I feel your pain.....But it all depends on what kind of "deal" went down when you bought the watch.......If you send it out yourself, you could be looking at $1000 MINIMUM!!!
I kid you not!!!
I think I would send it back to the seller and tell him to sort it out......
Remember...There are ALAYS other watches out there....

I dont know were some of you get these minimum $1000 service figures or if you actually pay this much. For a movement service non chrono? If you need dial, hands, bezel etc yes it can get expensive but for a movement service id say your over paying.I have over 30 vintage Rolex watches a year serviced by CW21 watchmakers and Master watchmakers and can tell you its not so. Feel free to pm me for a recommendation.

If the seller has offered to take it back and or get it serviced for you what more can he offer? Sounds fair to me?

I would return it to the party you bought it from. I just had to return a Zenith Daytona to a seller in Las Vegas.

good luck to you

So..., you're happy with your watchmaker, that's good... I'm not sure if you're offering to say who he is, or just telling everyone how lucky you are?

I would love a good recommendation and I'm sure we would all benefit from hearing who services your watches...
As for a service, the price I quoted is based on my own personal experience....

Many vintage Rolex watches will require a balance staff replacement due to past owners letting the watch run for many years without proper servicing. Balance staff replacement requires a certified watchmaker who is qualified enough to recognize when a balance staff is worn and also who can properly remove and replace the staff to ensure that the watch will run properly after the replacement.

There are also other parts that tend to wear on the bridges and manipulate. These parts take lots of time and skill to repair, and are very expensive if replaced.

A vintage watch that has been serviced at the necessary intervals will not need the same level of attention or amount of work that an improperly cared for watch will need. I have seen many vintage Rolex watches that the owner said they had never serviced it since they bought it. This might sound like a problem free watch, but there may be many parts worn out inside a vintage watch that has never had service.
