Why are Explorer 2 Prices Suddenly on The Rise?

I have been price watching and im seeing a sudden increase in gray market Explorer-2 prices some as high as $10K ??? Is this the next big one to watch?

What I have heard from authorized dealers is that they haven’t received many in the last year.

16570s have been discontinued for some time so its not out of the ordinary to see them rise.

I’m also watching the price and sales behaviour of 216570 EXPLORER 2 (on C24 with filter to EUROPE only, price ascending and up to 8000€ top) and can say that in the last week, out of the 39 pieces watched, 3 have been sold (two of the cheapest ones - listed in the 7000€ zone and another one originally listed at 7800€) and a couple more became unvailable. Another 2 or 3 pieces have seen price drops of 300 or even 500€.

My guess is that the watch moves on the Market at 7000 to 7500€, depending on few other filtering options: full set, etc.
In Romania the watch is quoted at 7800€ to 8000€ at AD so this makes it the only sport SS model available at lower prices on second wrist Market than AD, an “inversed premium”.

I heard the same thing. I'm quite interested in an Exp II Polar or an Exp I - and my AD told me that they haven't seen any in a very long time. A few months ago she had an Exp II black dial - but that was the first one she'd seen in forever.

I think the Exp II Polar White is a unique, beautiful, and somehow unassuming watch. Rare.

increased demand for the Explorer II caused by people not willing to pay the ridiculous premiums on the GMT Master II. just a much better value proposition overall, both at retail and on the secondary market.

It’s not so long ago that the 6 digits were in most UK AD windows. I turned down many opportunities as I wanted a GMT Master, but after trying one on, changed my mind and bought an Explorer 1 instead.
Perhaps the 5 digit would have been just right, never tried one, maybe someday!

They are dropping now, but previous to the covid horribleness they were rising as folks switched over to the other Rolex watches, once the popular models were out of stock. Same with all the less popular models.
Time to offload your stock if you need to pay your business rates/rent with no customers!

Plenty of Exp II's for 7-9k on the grey market...just have to look around.

Personally don't care about pricing, will say it is an exceptional timepiece. Solid movement, easy-to-read dial, and the lume lasts a looooong time. Typical Rolex excellent durability. Highly recommended!

The 5-digit 16570 is an excellent reference and until recently quite reasonably priced.

It's a very underrated watch. As GMT watches go it's one of the nicest. A brilliant movement, clean dial, a date function, gorgeous bracelet with easylink extension, awesome lume, and it's a Rolex . Of course it isn't dropping in value.

Just wait until they come out with the new one with ceramic bezel, watch the price then.

Maybe a grey bezel..

Prices are falling a little, not increasing, at the moment.

It’s a great piece, the 42mm Ref 216570. The discontinued 16570 is a favorite of mine, with the 40mm case size.

seems like there is NO SHORTAGE for any explorer model... whether ex1 or ex2.

I am not sure where you're seeing a significant 'rise' in valuation at.

Some BNIB Expl. II’s have been offered FS in TRF listings and sold near the $9K mark. $8350 is MSRP.

I’ve noticed it like the OP commented. Just do some research.

I wouldn’t be surprised if the current Exp 2 gets discontinued. One of the only references that didn’t get a price hike.

Historically, discontinued Explorer II's are one of the more expensive models you can find.

Rising prices is nothing new.

If you consider the big 3 (Sub, GMT and Daytona) are pretty hard to come by. Of the remaining Rolex sports models, it's the closest to those models. It has the professional bezel and 24 hour hand of the GMT, same basic dial layout and date as the Sub and GMT and it's the only sub $10,000 Rolex you can get at 42mm. In fact if it were a Tudor it would be in the Black Bay line as the BB Steel. It's also just a damn cool watch in two distinctly different colors.
