Hello everyone, newbie saying hello and possible idea for next acquisition
Greetings everyone,
Newbie here from Hong Kong and I'm pretty new to the watch hobby so please be gentle. :) I have but a few in the Rolex/Tudor family only...have a few lower end watches from Oris, Steinharts, Cartier (the only dress watch for that rare occasion)...nothing really worth mentioning. I'm not really into dressy watches as I'm mostly a shirt and jeans kind of guy so the tool watches fascinates me. Here's what I have right now... Rolex Explorer 214270  Tudor Heritage Ranger 79910  Tudor Submariner 75190  I'm think of getting a Rolex Sub as my next...I got that Tudor some 20+ yrs ago new and how I wish I saved up a little more and got a Rolex instead back then. Now the question is, should I go vintage or new? As I'm really new to this hobby I'm a little intimidated by the vintage route...read quite a few horror stories of how the parts of the watch are not genuine or not period correct. But whenever I read about the old Subs I'm just fascinated by how they look and that's something a new Sub can never give me. Any pointers? Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalk |

Beautiful collection and welcome to TRF!!
As for the decision on new versus vintage, both have their merits - really will depend on which look you prefer and how you'll wear the watch. For vintage tips, you may want to search the vintage forum here on TRF and post your questions there - we have several vintage experts who can help you if you go that route. Best of luck!!

Sounds like you like the way the older subs look...so nothing wrong with that. Go get one and if you don't like it, flip it for a new one. Don't overthink it.

nice watches, and welcome! another one to consider is the 16610 sub. not as bulky as the new ones, but not as perilous (potentially) as the older more vintage ones. i got my 2006 model (an anniversary LV) in march and love it!

Welcome to TRF, you have a great collection. Personally as you have the Tudor sub why not add something different, how about a 16710 GMT? Saves having to choose between your two subs.

Nice collection...if you don't want to go full out vintage then I would recommend the generation of subs just previous to the ceramic ones. Similar feel to the oldies but yet not really an oldie. Your sentiments about the Tudor said it you need to get the sub to close this particular chapter of watches for you.

You could also take advantage of the very affordable RSC prices in Hong Kong (less than half of those in the USA, UK, etc). I bought a water-damaged Sub 5513, and had it completely overhauled by RSC with a new dial and hands, so I get the best of both worlds...bright lume and a vintage case and movement and acrylic dome crystal. Not for the vintage purist, but it's a great daily wearer, and easy to change straps with the lug holes. All for the price of a used 14060.

Still undecided at the moment I guess I need some time to digest it all. I'm thinking maybe a 5513 circa 1967 (my birth year), or a Sub circa 1998 (my first born) would be nice. Anyone can give me an idea what these would run money wise, if I do find them that is. Thanks again for the welcome and I'm glad I stumbled across this forum. After doing some homework here and the Web on vintage pieces I think I'll go new afterall...it looks like there are enough frankens/fakes out there to really put off a newbie like myself.
But to be frank I'm a little put off by the new Sub's lug shape. The old ones are more slender and gives the watch a nice shape...whereas the new ones thicker lugs makes the watch a bit more broad and "square" looking... Maybe I should just hold out to find a nice(r) 14060m? But I also read that the new bracelet on the SubC is so much better... Sent from my D6653 using Tapatalk |
