First Patel from AD

Have a good relationship with my AD who is a Rolex and Patek dealer . They have asked me am I interested in looking at Pateks (Rolex buyer with this AD to date) What would you recommend I ask for as first watch ? Is a 5205 s realistic first watch (obviously love a 5168G) but presume have to buy the collection pieces to work towards the usual popular pieces . I am really not a fan of the calatrava's but realize I may have to buy one if I want retail access to any other models .

I say forget it
If you don’t want the piece, don’t buy it for the ephemeral relationship where fish much bigger than you are going to get the pieces anyway

Just buy a 5168 grey and be done with it unless you have much higher aspirations with Patek

I also have a very good relationship with our AD who has both Rolex and Patek. Initially they invited me for a Private viewing of several pieces I could purchase, including Calatravas and a PP Salmon. I would have requested the Salmon, but my wife wasn’t a big fan.
Initially they pushed the Calatrava and I told them it’s a beautiful piece (Black dial/White Gold) I can’t justify the Retail price.

I’ve always wanted a 5396 for my Rolex heavy collection and told them I have no problem waiting as long as it takes-and had no problem paying retail for the piece I
wanted.

I had it 3 weeks later and the retail premium was acceptable to me because it’s what I wanted.

I believe if you are a good customer you should be able to acquire one of the complications outside of Nautilus/Aquanaut.

Good luck!

Probably works out cheaper just to buy the watch you want from the grey dealer without wasting your time and waiting. god forbid you need to get out of the 5205 you're probably going to lose minimum 30% for an out and out sale.

If I were you and I wanted to keep the relationship, I’d ask and wait..IF…I also knew, I might wait 2,3,5,8 yrs or never see it at all….and you’re good with that.

Personally…. Calatrava retail is $28-32k…5168G retail is $49k + taxes

That’s IF YOU EVER SEE THE 5186

If you buy both at retail ….in 1,3, 5, 7, yrs….you've spent $80k ish + tax

5186G blue dials are under $75k on secondary right now

Agreed with sentiment above, just ask for the 5168G and wait. Even if it’s 2-3 years. I’m sure they will ask if you fancy anything else, and just say not at the moment.

If they introduce you to other pieces that you do like in the meantime, then buy it.

unless you are a super VIP with buying rolex and jewlery no AD would give you a 5168 as a first patek, simple won't happen so grey is the smart move here
