I have a theory that is quite unpopular with my Rolex friends... that is, there's a price "correction" coming. A lot of recent owners who are in at premium price are looking to get their investment back before the prices drop.

Then again, it could be the former leads to the latter.

That has always happened to every known product on the planet.

Anyone who buys a watch should have the sense to realise that it could possibly go up in value and it could also crash.

When I bought my Rolex, I considered the money spent and that it was never coming back.

The advantage of a crash is that I could afford to buy dozens of used watches that I could not afford today, so every cloud has a silver lining.

Regards

Mick

I appreciate this perspective. Personally I buy watches I want to own, so if they become worthless I am still content with my purchase. But, some tie some personal satisfaction into the value and an adjustment downward has impacts of much greater significance.

We should all just buy what we personally like... and well, I guess, afford.

Watches and cars are not investments. People look at them like that though.

I've owned dozens of high end vehicles. I made money on one and it was the most shocking day of my life. I never consider a watch or a car to have any re-sale value whatsoever. If I ever sell and make something back, fantastic, if not I got my miles and smiles out of the purchase.

One explanation could be the mortality rate of Sub owners...Rolex watches do tend to outlive their owners...

My theory is that people buy the sub because of its hype and then realise that too many people has it and then tries to offload it.

Has happened to some of my friends.

Since Rolex sells a million watches a year, and many of them are subs, it does not surprise me that a few of them are sold on eBay, TRF, etc.

Talking to my AD the other day and he said Rolex are due to increase their public prices soon.
He said in the last 18 months his AD has had two price increases but a public one is due?
Just passing on information.

Very interesting, from what I've been told Rolex is in no position to increase prices at this point. Swiss watch sales are down considerably from 2012 and the exchange rates of the Swiss Franc bode very very well for US trade.

...that said, you might be in a country other than the United States and might see an increase based on exchange rates, but Rolex themselves are not going to be increasing MSRP, not unless everything I've been told is wrong. Which is always a possibility.

I've been in this business for two decades, the days of rapid price increases are over, for the short term that is. Who knows what 10 years will bring, but I'd be surprised if we see any price increases at all during the next 5 or so years. And less surprised if we saw price decreases.

PS: I just noticed your location, I can not speak to prices in other locations, so it is quite possible you will see price increases in your region. I hope not for your wallets sake though.

PPS: Congratulations on your new watch! :)

What business are you in? I don't believe Rolex has had a price increase in a few years...another 5 would make it almost a decade. Doubtful...

One reason I got rid of my 114060 and kept my 14060 T<25 is that there are so many 114060s out there; look at the 114060 owners thread. There's absolutely no uniqueness to the model. I admit there are also a lot of DJIIs non-fluted with blue stick dials but it is a prettier watch and there are less of them. And if Rolex does go to a DJ40 or DJ39 then there won't be anymore. Not likely at all they'll end the run of the 114060s. The other reason is the 114060 just felt so out of balance on my wrist. But that is just my small wrist (6.5in); the 14060 feels so much better.

at any given moment, there can be an influx of any given model. I recently saw a boatload of SS Daytona's for sale. Doesn't mean anything really, one way or the other.

I've been involved in the watch business since the mid-90s.

Also, Rolex increased prices nearly 10% across the board in early 2014. Wholesale costs, end consumer price varied of course.
